Battle for Supremacy: Charm City Roller Girls Challenge Philly for the No. 2 Spot in the EastPosted: 06/19/2012On Saturday, July 7, 2012, the Clarence “Du” Burns Arena in Canton will be the site of an all-out roller derby revolution as two of the sport’s most talented leagues, the Charm City All Stars (#3 WFTDA East) and the Philly Roller Girls (#2 WFTDA East), fight for regional supremacy. Each league has gathered their two best teams for a doubleheader that’s sure to be a barn burner. In the opener, CCRG’s Female Trouble tackles Philly’s Independence Dolls for the first time since August 2009 where Philly dominated 186 to 76. However, both teams have undergone a significant transformation since 2009. While the Dolls have become a training ground for Philly’s travel team, Female Trouble has evolved into a unified force whose success is independent of its league’s all-star system. Nevertheless, both teams have a reputation for destruction and while it is still difficult to predict who will prevail, it’s safe to say CCRG will be out for revenge. The competition continues with the CCRG All Stars taking on the Philly Liberty Belles. These teams last met at the 2011 WFTDA East Region Playoffs where Charm controlled Philly in the first half only to encounter penalty trouble in the final period, leaving Philly with a narrow 153 to 127 victory. Fortunately, 2012 has spawned a smarter Charm City evidenced by the team’s tenacious teamwork and their solid record. Moreover, a win against Philly could rank CCRG No. 2 in the East for the first time in the league’s history. Clearly, both teams have something to prove with pride and regional ascendancy on the line. The action takes place at the Clarence “Du” Burns Arena, 1301 S. Ellwood Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the first whistle is at 6:30 p.m. with the second bout starting at approximately 8:00 p.m. This event is family friendly and wheelchair accessible. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15, but it’s recommended that patrons buy online at www.missiontix.com; kids under 12 are $5; general admission is $12; and VIP tickets are $25. Street parking is plentiful and paid parking lots are within walking distance of the venue. The Charm City Roller Girls (CCRG) is Baltimore's only all-female flat track roller derby league. CCRG is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and is proudly skater owned and operated.
